A Private Small Group Journey to East Africa with Beyond Group Travel

September 30 - October 11, 2019

Itinerary Highlights

  • Hand feed the giraffes.
  • Visit orphan elephants at the Daphne Sheldrick Orphanage.
  • Explore the Karen Blixen Museum in Nairobi.
  • Discover the private conservancy of Loisaba in Laikipia on day/night game drives and nature walks. If the river is high enough try your hand at fishing.
  • See the incredible wildlife of the Masai Mara and Serengeti National Parks on game drives that are unrivalled by any other National Park in Africa.
  • Experience a Hemingway style safari in the Serengeti at Sanctuary Kichakani - a camp that invites guests to intimately experience the movement of a million-plus wildebeests and zebras during the annual migration cycle while staying in luxury tents with a style evocative of the pioneer explorers of the 19th century and all the modern comforts.
  • A private Professional Safari Guide will be with our group from beginning to end. The Safari Guide will do most, if not all, of the activities with us, as well as recommend activities that are available in each location.
  • Laikipia boasts high wildlife concentrations and it's here that some of the most effective conservation work in the country is being done. These vast plains are home to half of the country’s endangered black rhinos and half of the world’s Grevy’s zebras.
  • The Masai Mara, a huge expanse of gently rolling grassland specked with flat-topped acacia trees has some of the greatest animal densities in Africa
  • One of the greatest wildlife-watching destinations on earth, the Serengeti is an epic place, and it's renowned for its predators, especially lions, leopards and cheetahs, with plenty of elephants in residence, too.
  • At certain times of the year you have the opportunity to see wildebeest and zebra migrating in their millions, following the ancient rhythm of Africa's seasons.

Monday, September 30, 2019 - Arrive Nairobi

Welcome to Nairobi!

Arrive in Nairobi and transfer (on own) to Tamarind hotel.

Nairobi is the largest city between Cairo and Johannesburg.  Though just south of the equator, it enjoys a spring-like climate.  It is a modern city, yet its main avenues blaze with color from tropical bushes and vines.  Less than 100 years ago, there was a river in an empty wilderness where Nairobi now stands.  Despite health hazards and the ever-present danger from wild animals, Nairobi became established by 1907 and quickly grew as a white farming community.  It also attracted world attention as the centre of big-game safaris for the rich and famous.  Perhaps the most famous was the safari of Teddy Roosevelt, which needed 500 porters to carry supplies and returned with 500 trophies. The nearby Nairobi National Park boasts the presence of all but one of the `Big Five'. Nairobi has a wealth of international restaurants.  Cuisine of all types is available from Chinese to French and Italian.  Several restaurants also offer local favorites.  Shopping in Nairobi varies from African clothing and craft shops to bazaar stalls and open-air markets where souvenir hunters find bargains ranging from woodcarvings to Persian carpets.  There are 3 excellent museums, offering insights into the fauna, culture and history of Kenya.

Thursday, October 3 and Friday, October 4, 2019 - Laikipia

Spend a full day at the Conservancy with morning and evening game drives.

Loisaba is a 56,000-acre private wildlife conservancy famous for its elephant population, as well as the big cats and is one of the best locations to see wild dog. While staying at Loisaba, guests can enjoy day and night game drives, guided bush-walks, horse riding, lion tracking, camel trekking, mountain biking and cultural visits. They can also visit the anti-poaching unit and other conservation projects in Laikipia.

Loisaba is a critical piece of the larger landscape connecting Laikipia to Samburu and Isiolo counties helping to ensure that a well-used wildlife and livestock movement corridor is protected. Importantly it serves as a keystone property in the landscape bringing community conservancies and privately managed lands together, by providing both a physical and institutional connection Loisaba increases the potential for greater stability and resilience in the entire socio-ecological Ewaso ecosystem.

Loisaba conservancy is a haven for more than 260 species of birds and 50 species of mammal.  Alongside the more common wildlife they are proud to have over 800 elephants who roam across Loisaba, large herds of buffalo, dozens of the endangered Grevys Zebra, reticulated giraffe and the beautiful Greater Kudu. The cat population is thriving, with over three prides of Lion on Loisaba at one time and numerous Leopard and Cheetah sightings. To top it off the Wild dog, thought for many years to be extinct in the region, are once again being sighted regularly and often denning on Loisaba.

Saturday, October 5, 2019 - Fly to Maasai Mara National Reserve

Have breakfast at leisure and be transferred to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Maasai Mara National Reserve.

The Maasai Mara plays host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. 1,500 square kilometers (580 square miles) of broad biscuit-colored savannah sprawls as home to huge numbers of birds (almost 600 species) and animals and is adjacent to the enormous expanse of the Serengeti; the two make up the most diverse ecosystem on the continent.

The word 'mara' comes from the local dialect, Maa, as spoken by the Maasai and means 'spotted'; certainly, the vast grasslands here are dotted by the shadows of small clouds which scud across a huge sky above.  Every year this special place witnesses the most incredible animal phenomenon on the planet - the wildebeest migration.  The mass of plains game moving north from the Serengeti in search of fresh pasture returning south around October, a heaving line of grunting, snorting life that stretches for miles.  At the Mara River they mass together nervously on the banks before plunging onwards; their pursuit of food overwhelming their fear of the crocodiles that lie in wait for the annual feast.  This incredible spectacle involves the movement of over a million wildebeest and their fellow travelers, half a million Thomson's gazelles, half a million zebras as well as smaller herds of topi and eland all operating on the principle of safety in numbers. They are followed, inevitably, by predators, primarily lions and hyena.

Sunday, October 6th and Monday, October 7th - Maasai Mara

After breakfast enjoy the camps facilities with morning and evening game drives.

Overlooking the endless, game-filled grasslands of the Maasai Mara, Kichwa Tembo offers a series of spacious, stylish tents with stunning views across the world's greatest natural wilderness. The 48 tents are a picture of rustic sophistication, with comfortable twin beds, en suite showers and shady verandahs with sweeping views over the surrounding savannah. From your tent, it's possible to see large herds of elephant, prides of big cats, and the world's greatest wildlife spectacle - the migration of over a million wildebeest and zebra, which pass this way between July and September on their instinctive march to pastures new. The camp's expert Maasai guides are on hand to reveal more of this magical wilderness through game drives, bush walks and visits to the villages of the local Ilkarekeshe Maasai.

Tuesday, October 8, 2019 - Fly to Serengeti National Park

Upon arrival in Migori, you will be met by an A&K representative and transfer for about one hour to Tarime for your 15-minute Coastal flight to Serengeti National Park at 11:00. Upon arrival in Serengeti, meet your Sanctuary driver guide and transfer to your camp, where you will arrive for lunch. After lunch, you will have afternoon game drives in Serengeti National Park.

The camp, ten huge tents, sumptuously comfortable and simply elegant, is reminiscent of the bygone era of safari, with sturdy hardwood furniture and generous swathes of mosquito net over huge beds.  As in safari days of old, your tent attendant is on hand to cater to your needs, from the perfect timing of your shower to the perfect pre-dinner drink.  The nomadic nature of the camp, though, means it blends into its bush environments with sensitive seamlessness whilst granting its guests excellent, up-to-the-minute, game viewing

Wednesday, October 9 and Thursday, October 10, 2019 - Serengeti National Park

You have a two full days to explore the Serengeti National Park on game drives.

The northern Serengeti’s star attraction is the Mara River, filled with hippos and crocodiles, which cut through the area. Driving through the area on your game drive today you will have the chance to see lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and herds of topi and bat eared fox. If you would like to maximize your time game viewing you can take a picnic lunch out into the park and enjoy a meal out in the vast savannah before returning to your lodge later in the day. One of the world's last great wildlife refuges, the Serengeti, stretches between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Lake Victoria.  The name comes from the Maasai word siringet, meaning "endless plains". The Serengeti's 14,763 square kilometers contains about three million large animals, many of them taking part in seasonal migrations, unparalleled in nature.

Every year, triggered by the rains, 1.3 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson's Gazelle gather to undertake the long trek to new grazing lands. The migration of the herbivores roughly defines the boundaries of Serengeti National Park, which is the central zone of the Serengeti ecosystem, an area that also takes in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Maswa Game Reserve in the west.

After breakfast, proceed on a City Tour of Kigali including the Memorial Centre and Crafts Centers – this tour will be tailored to the group traveling.

The history of Rwanda dates back centuries, Kigali has been a part of it for a hundred years. Founded in 1907 as a German settlement, Kigali did not become the capital until Rwanda’s independence in 1962 when it replaced the colonial seat of power in Butare. Since then, the city has seen major economic development resulting in what it is today; a vibrant African city of 1 million with wide boulevards, an international airport, world-class hotels and restaurants, crafts & curio shops as well as a lively, cosmopolitan population. Visit the Kandt Museum, tour old Kigali and the Craft centers, visit the genocide memorial site where you learn about Rwanda’s history pre-colonial to 1994 genocide as well as other genocides in the world. Tour more and see the new developments; the recovery has been incredible, a true testament to humankind’s resilience.

After a safari briefing, over lunch at a local restaurant, you drive north to Ruhengeri at the foothills of the Virungas arriving at your hotel in the late afternoon in time for dinner and overnight

Sunday, October 13, 2019 - Gorilla Tracking

After an early breakfast, drive to Volcanoes National Park HQs to be allocated a gorilla tracking group. (30 Min) 0700 hrs: Briefing by your trackers then drive to the trail head for the start of an amazing adventure.

Gorilla tracking in Rwanda is often described as “life changing” and with good reason. With only an estimated 880 Gorillas left in the world, to see these gentle creatures in their natural habitat is a truly unique moment. Gorillas make their homes in and amongst the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains in the Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda. Trek to see them and you’ll be introduced by your expert trackers and guides to one of the fully-habituated families of mountain gorillas and you can stay with them for an awe-inspiring hour, often crouching just a few feet away, whilst the gorillas go about their daily lives.

Hikes in the mountains can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours + depending on the family allocated to your group and their location. The journey back can take just as long, but you are often carried along by the euphoria you feel at seeing the gorillas!

Expert guides give a pre-trek briefing on specific protocols and rules for visiting the gorillas that live within an altitude of 2500 and 4000m. Porters are available to help carry backpacks and cameras, as well as helping you with your footing along your hike which can be hard work, but well worth it.

In the afternoon visit Ibi’iwacu Cultural Centre.

20.3 The purchase of special event tickets is subject to the refund policy of each individual event. Please refer to the specific event policy for details.

20.4 BGT & A&K reserves the right to charge for financial penalties, fees and losses incurred in excess of your cancellation fee as a result of cancellation.

21. CANCELLATION BY A&K:
We reserve the right in any circumstances to cancel your holiday for any reason. However, we will not cancel your hotel arrangement less than 60 days before your departure date, except for reasons of force majeure or failure by you to pay the final balance. If you fail to pay the balance of the holiday price at least 60 days before departure, A&K will treat your booking as cancelled and levy the cancellation charges set out in clause 19. If A&K is obliged to cancel your holiday in any other circumstances before departure, A&K will use its best endeavours to offer alternative arrangements of equivalent or very closely similar standard and price, if available; travel arrangements of a lower standard and a refund of the difference in price; or will give you a full and prompt refund of all monies paid.

22. FORCE MAJEURE:
22.1 Force majeure means unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond A&K's control or the control of our suppliers, the consequence of which neither A&K nor its suppliers could avoid even with all due care, including, but not limited to, war, threat of war, riot, civil strife, terrorist activity (actual or threatened), industrial dispute, unavoidable technical problems with transport, machinery or equipment, power failure, changes imposed by rescheduling or cancellation of flights by an airline, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, flood, drought, adverse weather conditions, epidemics or outbreaks of illness and level of water in rivers.
22.2 In the event of a cancellation or material alteration to the trip as a result of the circumstances as described in this clause A&K may in their sole and absolute discretion:

    a) offer the traveller(s) alternative travel arrangements or products of comparable standard as may be appropriate in the circumstances; or

    b) if alternative travel arrangements or products are not offered by A&K, A&K will make a prompt proportional refund of monies paid by the traveller.

22.3 A&K may charge a reasonable fee to cover the administration costs associated with providing alternative travel arrangements or products.

23. CLAIMS AND REFUNDS:
Refunds are not made for any missed services, except for verifiable extenuating circumstances. Please see our LIMITS ON ABERCROMBIE & KENT’S RESPONSIBILITY clause below. For verifiable claims to be considered, they must be received in writing within 30 days of the termination of the program. Any adjustment considered will be based on the actual price of the services involved and not on a per diem basis. Adjustments will not be made for unused sightseeing trips or meals. A&K will not accept any liability for any claims that are not received within 30 days of the termination of your program. All claims for days missed while travelling should be made in writing within 30 days of the program. Any payment made by A&K, either by way of refund or as the result of a successful claim, will be limited to, and not exceed, the sums retained by A&K in respect of the related booking.

24. LIMITS ON ABERCROMBIE & KENT’S RESPONSIBILITY:
Abercrombie & Kent Kenya Ltd, its employees, shareholders, officers, directors, successors, agents and assigns (collectively A&K), does not own or operate any entity which is to or does provide goods or services for your trip with the exception of a limited number of vehicles. It purchases transportation (by aircraft, coach, train, vessel or otherwise), hotel and other lodging accommodations, restaurant, ground handling and other services from various independent suppliers (including from time to time other affiliated Abercrombie & Kent companies). All such persons and entities are independent contractors. As a result, A&K is not liable for any negligent or wilful act of any such person or entity or of any third person.

In addition and without limitation, A&K is not responsible for any injury, financial or physical loss, death, inconvenience, delay or damage to personal property in connection to the provision of any goods or services whether resulting from but not limited to acts of God or force majeure, illness, disease, acts of war, civil unrest, insurrection or revolt, animals, strikes or other labour activities, criminal or terrorist activities of any kind, overbooking or downgrading of services, food poisoning, mechanical or other failure of aircraft or other means of transportation or for failure of any transport mechanism to arrive or depart on time.

There are many inherent risks in adventure travel of the type involved here, which can lead to illness, injury or even death. These risks are increased by the fact that these trips take place in remote locations, far from medical facilities.

If you decide to participate in any activities including, but not limited to, any excursions involving animals, riding on animals, SCUBA diving, snorkelling, boating, hot air ballooning, zip-lining, high altitude treks, climbing, quad biking, para sailing, parachuting, kayaking, white-water rafting, primate tracking and any activity which A&K considers to carry inherent risks of serious illness, injury or death (“Activities”) then you fully understand and acknowledge that Activities carry with them various inherent risks, including serious illness, injury or death and you take complete responsibility for your own health and safety and agree to assume all risks of injury, illness or death, whether foreseen or unforeseen that may befall you as a result of participating in any Activities and agree to release A&K and its affiliates, their agents, employees and representatives from any liability whatsoever related thereto, to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Further, as consideration for being permitted to participate in the Activities, you release A&K, whether known or unknown, from, and agree not to sue or make claim against A&K for property damage, cancellation of any activities for any reason, illness, negligent rescue operations or procedures, personal injury or death arising from your participation in the Activities, and any activity related thereto, including transportation to and from the site of the Activities, regardless of whether such property damage, illness, personal injury, or death results from the negligence of A&K (but not its reckless, wilful, or fraudulent conduct) and/or from any defect in equipment. You further agree to indemnify and hold A&K harmless with respect to any claim made against A&K by anyone else which a) related to your participation, or b) would be subject to the above release and covenant not to sue if you had made this claim directly yourself.

25. HEALTH PRECAUTIONS:
Please ensure that you consult your personal physician about anti malaria precautions and other inoculations and vaccinations before travel. Where applicable, please ensure that whilst travelling you carry a valid Yellow Fever certificate.

26. TRAVEL ADVISORIES/WARNINGS:
It is the responsibility of travellers to become informed about the most current travel advisories and warnings by referring to their respective government agencies. In the event of an active State Department or government agency Travel Warning against travel to specific destination location(s) of the trip, should the traveller still choose to travel, notwithstanding any travel advisory or warning, the traveller assumes all risk of personal injury, death or property damage that may arise out of the events like those advised or warned against.

27. TRAVELLERS’ REPRESENTATIONS:
If you or any member of your party has any medical problem or disability which may affect your stay, please provide us with full details before we confirm your booking so that we can try to advise you as to the suitability of your chosen arrangements.  We may require you to produce a doctor’s certificate certifying that you are fit to participate in the tour. Acting reasonably, if we are unable to properly accommodate the needs of the person(s) concerned, we will not confirm your booking or if you did not give us full details at the time of booking, we will cancel it and impose applicable cancellation charges when we become aware of these details

28. AIR TRANSPORTATION:
AIR TRANSPORTATION: Airlines concerned are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event occurring while passengers are not on board their aircraft. International air carriers are also subject to international air conventions limiting their liability. These limitations of liability are explained on the e-ticket or on the reverse of the airline ticket and when issued, this constitutes the sole contract between the respective air carrier(s) and their passengers.
Airlines overbook all flights! We therefore recommend that you check in online as soon as online check-in is made available by the airline. If you do not book in online, or for any reason are unable to do so, we recommend that you are at the airport to check in 3 hours prior to departure as airlines may re-allocate seats in the event of late check-in and arrivals. A&K is unable to check you in and it is your responsibility to ensure you are checked in within the appropriate time. A&K is neither responsible nor liable if you are downgraded an airline class as a result of the airline overbooking the class in which you are booked. Seat reservations are at the discretion of the airline and may be changed at any time without notice.

29. PASSPORT & VISAS
Please note that passport holders are responsible for obtaining the required documentation applicable for entry. BGT will consult with travelers on all visas required at an additional expense.

Please note also that passports must be valid for six (6) months before departure and should also have sufficient blank pages for visas and immigrations stamps. BGT & A&K cannot be held responsible should you be denied entry to a country due to non-compliance with these requirements.

30. TRAVEL INSURANCE:
BGT & A&K strongly recommend all clients take out comprehensive travel insurance prior to date of travel.  This insurance should cover cancellation and curtailment, all medical expenses including evacuation/repatriation, personal baggage, personal liability, death and permanent disability and travel document insurance. BGT & A&K cannot be held responsible for any costs arising from such loss or injury. Insurance will be quoted at time of confirmation.

31. ARBITRATION AGREEMENT:
Any claim arising out of or relating to these Terms and Conditions, to the Limits on A&K’s Responsibility clause, to the brochure, to any information relating in any way to the trip, to the trip itself or to any products or services related to the trip, shall be settled in the first instance by binding arbitration in the applicable legal forum as detailed in clause 32 of these Terms and Conditions. In lieu of a personal appearance at arbitration the arbitration may be conducted by telephonic means. Arbitration is the exclusive forum in the first instance for dispute resolution and except as otherwise provided by statute, each party shall bear its own costs and expenses and an equal share of the arbitrator and administrative fees.

32. APPLICABLE LAW AND FORUM:
This agreement shall be construed, interpreted and enforced in accordance with, and shall be governed by the laws of Kenya. It is agreed between A&K and the travellers that all lawsuits against A&K arising under, in connection with, or incidental to the tour shall be filed, if at all, in the courts of Kenya to the exclusion of the courts of or in any other country or jurisdiction.
