Auckland, “The City Of Sails”, is spread over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours on New Zealand’s North Island. It earns its sobriquet from having more boats per capita than any other city in the world. The first settlers here were the Maori, and are still a vibrant component of its cosmopolitan population.

Auckland offers the visitor all the amenities of a world-class city. Browse the shops of Queen Street or the Parnell area with its galleries and boutiques in quaintly restored Victorian buildings. For a magnificent panorama of the city travel to Mount Eden, the city’s highest point, or visit the Skytower for loftier views. Minutes from downtown you can relax on a black sand beach, or explore the America’s Cup Yachting Village. Further afield there are the spectacular pine-clad Waitakere Mountains, the amazing Waitomo Glowworm Caves and the verdant vineyards of Kumeu River Wines.

Arriving on Day 1, you’ll be transferred to your hotel and have the remainder of the day and dinner to enjoy on your own.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel on Day 2, you will start your day with a drive into the fertile farmland and wine-growing areas of Kumeu and Huapai before reaching Muriwai Beach on the rugged west coast. Here, you will stop and walk approximately 250 meters (275 yards) to a special lookout above one of the world’s few mainland gannet colonies.

As you will be very close to the white seabirds, you will be able to watch them nesting, feeding and flying in the updrafts offshore. Their behavior will depend on the season and time of day, but regardless of what the activity, you can expect it to be hugely entertaining, especially if they are diving for fish. There should be hundreds, if not thousands of gannets in the colony, all of them clustered about the cliffs side by side.

Continuing on, you will travel through more beautiful countryside to Haumoana, a 200-acre working farm on the lovely Kaipara Peninsula. Situated high on a hill, the property offers a splendid views over the rolling land and out to the harbor. The farm raises sheep and beef and supports a herd of friendly fallow deer that will usually come when called. It makes for an excellent photo opportunity.

Then, following a hearty lunch, you will watch a sheep-shearing demonstration. In the hands of a skilled farmhand, a sheep can typically be sheared head to tail in about three minutes.

Leaving the farm, return to Auckland city by way of the farming areas of Waitoki and Dairy Flat to join the northern motorway at Albany. Continue into the city across the Auckland Harbour Bridge and through the downtown shopping area.

Arrive back at your hotel in Auckland. Dinner is on your own.

Following breakfast at the hotel on Day 3, you will drive north towards Matakana, a small town in the heart of one of New Zealand’s newest wine regions. Here, you will have the opportunity to visit one of the distinct wineries for tastings and to discover how the various wines are produced on the gentle slopes throughout this region.

Your will also make a stop at Morris & James - creators of colorful ceramics, pots, home décor and garden ware, all created on-site in expansive buildings that house the showroom and pottery factory. A Matakana institution, Morris & James was established in 1977 by Ant Morris, and today is run by over 15 artisans and crafts people, who continue Ant’s legacy, whilst exploring new creative directions and uses for clay. While on site, visit the Pottery Café for a cold drink and snack.

Continuing on, you will enjoy lunch at one of the many rural vineyards where the menu reflects the local cuisine and celebrates New Zealand’s cultural diversity.

Following this extended visit, you will drive on toward Auckland to return to the hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure with dinner on your own.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel on Day 4. After check out, you will be transferred to the ship for embarkation.

  • Price: $1,699 per guest based on double occupancy

Arriving on Day 1, you’ll be transferred to your hotel and have the remainder of the day and dinner to enjoy on your own.

After breakfast on Day 2, we’ll travel through the farming and wine-growing areas of West Auckland to Muriwai Beach, stopping at the cliff tops overlooking the beach. You’ll walk approximately 250 meters, through native plants, to the lookout to watch white seabirds nesting, feeding and flying in the updrafts offshore. Their behavior is hugely entertaining, especially when diving for fish. You’ll view hundreds, if not thousands of gannets in the colony, clustered side by side.

From Muriwai, travel through rural farming districts to the Sutton Family property “Hunting Lodge Winery” for lunch and a wine tasting. Then it’s back to Auckland city where you’ll enjoy dinner on your own.

After breakfast on Day 3, you’ll depart from the city, travel along the southern motorway, past the city's southern suburbs and over the Bombay Hills. We’ll descend the Waikato River Valley, following the course of the river through the fertile farmlands, past Taupiri to Ngaruawahia, the seat of the Maori King.

Here, we’ll embark on a guided tour of the world-famous Waitomo Glow-worm Caves, a true geological phenomenon of nature. Unique to New Zealand, these tiny creatures radiate a fluorescent blue-green glow that illuminates the caves and underground streams the glow-worms call home.

As you travel on a short cruise through the limestone formations, you’ll gain insight into the legends and facts surrounding this fascinating and beautiful oddity of nature.

Onward to Otorohanga Kiwi House, a non-profit charity dedicated to the conservation of New Zealand’s native wildlife. Here, you’ll view New Zealand’s national bird, the kiwi, in a special nighttime display. Get up close and personal with their large collection of unique birds and reptiles and stroll through New Zealand's largest free-flight dome aviary.

After lunch in Waikato, you’ll return through the pastoral Waikato region to Auckland where you have the remainder of the evening and dinner to enjoy on your own.

After breakfast on Day 4, we’ll take you on a sightseeing tour along the waterfront. We’ll stop at Bastion Point for views over the harbor before continuing to St. Heliers Bay and through the eastern residential suburbs. We’ll also see the Auckland Domain, the Auckland Museum (no visit), and Parnell Village.

  • Price: $2,599 per guest based on double occupancy

Arriving on Day 1, you’ll be transferred to your hotel and have the remainder of the day and dinner to enjoy on your own.

After breakfast on Day 2, you will transfer to the airport for a scenic flight over the island-studded Hauraki Gulf to the Great Barrier Island on the edge of the gulf.

Once you land, the local guide will explain what life is like on the Great Barrier Island, which has a population of just 700 people. The early settlers were Maoris, whalers and miners seeking gold, silver and copper. The guide will elaborate on the island’s history and geography while pointing out the differences between the rugged east coast and the more sheltered western side.

Following lunch, you will check into Trillium Lodge, where you will spend the evening. You will be free until dinner to enjoy the hotel and the surrounding area as you please.

Following an early breakfast at the lodge on Day 3, you will enjoy a morning “Hooked on Barrier” fishing charter. The waters surrounding the Great Barrier Island are teeming with fish such as snapper, kahawai, terakihi, trevally and kingfish. All the fishing gear will be provided, and the crew will offer tips so you can increase your chances of catching fish. Be sure to look for whales and dolphins, which also frequent these waters.

Back at the wharf, the fish that have be caught will be cooked for your lunch.

The afternoon will be at your leisure. You will have the option of simply luxuriating at the lodge or perhaps burn off your lunch with some walking options or take a trip to the beach.

Once the sun goes down, you will discover that there isn’t much ambient lighting on the Great Barrier Island, which makes it ideal for star gazing. In fact, the island is one of the few places in the world that has been granted a Dark Sky Sanctuary status to safeguard its night sky conditions.

During the evening’s Good Heavens star-gazing experience, local dark sky ambassadors will point out the astronomical wonders above. Because the sky is so dark, the stars and constellations will look brighter and closer than ever. The ambassadors will also share Maori legends linked to the night sky.

After breakfast at the lodge on Day 4, you will fly back to Auckland and begin exploring the vibrant downtown. At Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, you will have the opportunity to browse the Auckland Museum. As you will discover, it holds a spectacular collection of Pacific treasures, including a Maori war canoe carved from a giant totara tree.

You will also enjoy a leisurely tour of the Winter Garden within the park. Designed in the early 1900s, the garden’s two Victorian-style greenhouses contain rare and exotic plants. The indigenous ferns growing in a sunken quarry are particularly noteworthy.

You will then drive along the waterfront, where you may pause for photos of the volcanic island Rangitoto, which lies just off shore.

Lunch follows, after which you will tour Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium. You can expect to see New Zealand’s only colony of Antarctic penguins and an ever-changing parade of marine life through the viewing tunnel. It is quite the experience to stand in the tunnel and watch creatures such as stingrays and sharks glide by overhead.

Afterwards, you will drive to the pier and embark the cruise ship.
