Tuesday, October 9, 2018 - Vienna

This morning stroll through the city center to the Vienna State Opera for a guided tour (rehearsal schedule permitting). Opened in 1869, it is widely considered as one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses. Afterwards visit the Mozarthaus, which occupies three floors, the centrepiece of which is the Baroque apartment on the first floor consisting of four large rooms, six small rooms, a kitchen and also contains a magnificent musical clock dating from around 1790. Mozart moved thirteen times during his ten years in Vienna but lived at this prestigious address from 1784 until 1787, during which time he composed The Marriage of Figaro. It was here that he received his friend and fellow composer Joseph Haydn and also taught the young Beethoven. After a guided visit, you will enjoy a short private piano concert in the Bösendorfofer Hall situated in the vaulted basement.

Enjoy lunch* at Café Central. This is a typical, charming Viennese coffee house where intellectuals used to meet and read the daily newspapers. Some spent so much time here that their mail was even delivered to this address.

This afternoon visit the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, the vast summer residence of the Habsburgs, which takes its name from a beautiful spring found on the estate. The spectacular setting of the Palace and Gardens is a prime example of Baroque planning, comprising strict architectural symmetry further enhanced by its gardens with fountains, trees and alleyways. Your guide will lead you through a selection of staterooms belonging to the Empress Maria Theresa, who reigned for 40 years as the last of the Habsburg rulers in the Austrian Empire. You will also learn what life may have been like for her daughter, Marie Antoinette, who spent much of her childhood here.

Following your tour, experience a mouth-watering Apple Strudel demonstration in Schönbrunn Palace’s Café Residenz. Admire the skills of a professional sugar baker as they create the world-famous Viennese Apple Strudel and let you in on some insider secrets to this Viennese bakery tradition, prior to sampling the delicious delicacy.

This evening travel through the Vienna Woods to a gala farewell dinner at a traditional Heuriger. A special way of consuming wine, the Heuriger has developed in Vienna due to the vineyards being so close to the city. Enjoy a traditional dinner* at Hof Zimmermann, a family run Heuriger wine restaurant, accompanied by traditional Viennese Schrammel music played on the accordion and violin.
